Karen Austin, after running 100-miles in 24-hours.
Did you read that? It’s not a typo. Karen is a Personal Training Client of mine and an occasional class drop-in at the gym. On February 8th, she completed the Delirium Ultra 24-Hour Endurance Run. She placed third overall, covering 100-miles in 23:45!!
A few things worth noting:
- Karen stays fit by CrossFitting and running some low-medium mileage. 30ish miles in a week might be a heavy running week for her. She says Ultra-Running is all mental, as long as you are reasonably fit. (Weird, because 100 miles seems like a very real, VERY physical distance.)
- Her goal for the race was to complete 85 miles. Who finishes 85 miles and says, “You know what, let’s tack on another 15, why not?!”
- I have run a 2:50 marathon and completed an Ironman. I’ve run as many as 80 miles per week and trained as much as 18 hours per week for those endurance events. And still, I’m not sure I have what it takes to finish a 100-miler. I’m in awe.
Karen, you are nothing short of Top Notch in my book. Keep up the strong work.
You can listen to Neil and I chat with Karen about her impressive accomplishment here.
